Alcohol and Drug Addiction in Maryland

Maryland has suffered with its fair share of the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse and related illnesses. Although its public officials have been trying to address this crisis, data shows that it has been getting worse for several years now.

Addiction Facts in Maryland

Maryland particularly struggles with addiction to opioids and prescription pills, as well as many other types of substances. The Department of Health and Hygiene has also reported that drug-related overdose deaths have been increasing over the years.

In particular, overdose deaths involving alcohol, prescription medications, benzodiazepines, fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine affected local residents from every economic class.

However, the sharpest increased in the death rates involving a drug overdose was related to fentanyl. This is not surprising especially when you consider that this substance can be as much as 50 to 100 times as strong as heroin and morphine. From 2013 to 2014, for instance, fentanyl overdose deaths more than doubled in Maryland.

The state has also been struggling with high rates of alcohol abuse and addiction. At the same time, it has seen an increase in the rates of death linked to the individual consumption of alcohol.  Since 2010, alcohol has been causing more and more deaths in Maryland than ever before.

However, nowhere has this state been affected the most than in terms of the rates of death related to heroin. For instance, Maryland lost 250 lives to a heroin overdose in 2011 alone. By 2014, this number had risen to over 600.

State data also shows that the consequences of substance abuse and addiction continue getting worse from year to year. This is why officials have been trying to effectively address the drug menace in Maryland.
